January...

My eldest brought some special lung-based form of the plague home from chess camp, so we've all been busy with that, dealing with my mom, and of course, chess.

I haven't gotten to read here much, or really had anything I want to write about, which is highly unusual for me because even when I can't write, I still have things I want to write.

January really just sucks. It's the one month the whole house comes down with some awful child-borne illness, it's miserably cold, it's always when I feel way older than I really am, we try to squeeze birthday money out of rocks, and I'm so over giving my mom money, then watching her try to sell everything that ever meant anything. She has become frustratingly strange about "Stuff" since he died. My aunt sent a box to "The family", full of old postcards of my grandfather's and stuff like that, yea...I'm insanely frustrated with my mother right now.
I've been avoiding the attentions of my darling husband and Master too. In all fairness, his attentions are somewhat less than enthusiastic, given that he is also deserving of quarantine. What can I say, it's January.
He came back to life enough to point out that I've been slacking on everything in a major way--I was just alive enough to cringe.

Now I'm going to have more coffee, clean my house, and search for my sense of humor. A sense, which it seems, is sadly lacking at the moment.

  1. Being sick. Birthday after birthday. Squeezing money out of rocks. Being frustrated with mom. I wish I didn't know what you mean.

Maybe if we close our eyes tight enough and click our heels three times it will all go away...

  2. 1st point of order...January is the Monday of the year. It just sucks! We do the birthday mambo here too. Horrible. No one wants to do anything! It's almost as bad as a November birth that's closing in on the holiday season. Add to it the bitter cold or oppressive heat (depending if it's your winter or summer) and people sick...Ya it sucks.

As for finding your sense of humor....Well mouse thinks the kids hid her's and forgot where they put it..Sure it will turn up eventually..she'll come across it when she leasts expects to and it will probably be vastly inappropriate. too.

    Feel better! <3,

    1. mouse,
Ooh, never thought of it as the Monday of the year, but that is soo true. Bitter cold is the theme here these days.

"she'll come across it when she leasts expects to and it will probably be vastly inappropriate. too." LOL! So very very true--I just know that one day my inappropriately opportunistic sense of humor will be the end of me.

      Thanks for the giggle.

  3. I am with you! January sucks! Stuck inside, cloudy, everyone is sick, everyone has SAD. My birthday is in January and I have always hated it because everyone is SO grumpy!

At least we can find comfort in the fact that we aren't the only one AND we are marching toward spring as we speak!

    Thinking of you!

    1. Surrendered Wife,
My eldest is terribly jealous of his little brother because brother has an August birthday, and when one looks at that from February, it's hard not to feel like you have the short end of the stick, lol.

      Spring! Is it here yet??

  4. oh gosh, I feel your pain - January is THE birthday month for us - we have THREE. Add that to the one at the end of the December and plus of course Christmas and we really are squeezing money out of rocks :(

(not to mention we've already had birthdays in September and November...)

    1. mc kitten,
Ooh, three! We're down to one and then kiddo's in early Feb. Three is a lot for right after Christmas, especially when you have some right before too!

Just stick to squeezing and don't try kicking the rocks. *limps off muttering about bleeding toes.*

    1. tori,
      I like it too!
We're taking grandma out to dinner, then having chess cake which I may or may not have kind of forced on her. See, the kiddo wants one bad, and I've never made on checkerboard inside and an experiment had to be done...
For his birthday it's going to be bacon/shrimp carbonara and orange/chocolate chess cake complete with pieces. Spoiled child--has it all figured out, and his birthday's not even until next month!
I'm told that normal children will eat hot dogs on their birthdays...

  6. I'm going to imagine your sense of humor is vacationing on a beach somewhere with mine. I think that will help me.
You, on the other hand, may be running screaming into the night.
    But I'm gonna take it!

    1. Jz,
Ooh, I think I feel warmer already! And in good company too. Yes, I'll just focus on that as I run screaming into the night. Seems like a good compromise!

Nods* Oh yes, a morning without coffee isn't actually morning--it's a not so slow descent into hell. Right right!

  8. I've always felt that way about February which is way better than January - less days.

Hope things get better and try to pretend it's February. lol

    1. sunnygirl,
Lol yes, less days can be a very good thing. I was considering pretending it was February, then I started to panic that I don't have anything for kiddo's birthday yet...And suddenly, my birthday was much much closer. Perhaps I'll dream big and pretend that it's April.

  10. My eldest has her birthday in January - it is the silver lining of an otherwise harsh month. It is the daylight I miss.

  11. I feel for you. We were all sick from Christmas until March last year. Looks like it is becoming an annual thing here for us.

My boys are the same way with food and birthdays. They get to pic what we have for dinner and it is never anything easy. Lucky for me, when times are hard, they are happy with just the food. Hope you all feel better soon

    1. Baby C,
It makes winter a bit ridiculous, doesn't it? Being sick with kids sucks. And seriously, how long can a household make a single virus last?? Rhetorical question I suppose...We're aiming for the record.

It's good to have good kids like that, isn't it? And really, everyone knows that food is of the utmost importance! I've heard more about the cake than anything else he may want...
