I will not own a Kindle. I adore real books far to much for that. I did however, have to download the Kindle app onto my computer.
And I discovered something wondrous--you can find free books!
I mean, they aren't true paper and ink books where you can flip the pages and smell that lovely book smell, and slide a piece of paper between the pages, and put them up on the shelf just for pretties when you're done...
But!
Free stories!
No one told me!!!
And did you know that, if you type "free Kindle books" into the search bar on Amazon, you get 55,590 results???
I mean, I'm sure they aren't all worth reading, but omygoodies!
No one told me!
I had to add this after the fact, because really, was there ever going to be a better post for it?
Welcome!
ReplyDeleteI'm a book person. I love love LOVE books.
And I love my ereader because it makes more books more accessible.
Join us... (you will be assimilated!)
-sin
sin,
DeleteLol! I think that I was assimilated the moment I found a Diana Gabaldon book for free...
Our library has e-loans too - its free, you can do it online - don't even have to go to the library - and they even disappear after 3 weeks - just like giving back a library book - except you can't lose them. Maybe your library does too?
ReplyDeletegg,
DeleteOoh! I wonder if our local library is too primitive for that...If not, surely they wouldn't discriminate against my location for online books...
And no late fees!
Did I forget to mention there are free books for Kindle? :)
ReplyDeleteBtw, did you 'have' to download the Kindle app for the reason I think you downloaded it? :)
Sarah,
DeleteYes, you totally forgot!!
I admit nothing...
I said I would never own a kindle, I love the feel of a book - turning the pages the feel of the book in my hand. My kids bought me a kindle for my birthday and guess what I love it! When I need something to read which is all the time I don't have to run to the store or the library I can just peruse the kindle store or amazon and download whatever interests me. Mr. D loves it because I'm not adding to the ever growing piles of books all over the house because I've run out of space on the shelves. I still like a book sometimes, but there are definitely advantages to my kindle.
ReplyDeleteMrs. D,
Deletenothing compares to the tactile sensation of reading a book. But free books that don't take up space...There is merit to that!
Still don't have a kindle, but I buy the ebooks and read them on my laptop!
ReplyDeleteRenee,
DeleteYea, I have gone far enough over to the dark side to have discovered the joy in that!
yes i did know, sorry I didn;t ever tell you. have fun!
ReplyDeleteL
little,
Deleteyou knew?!
Ah well, it's like Christmas in June, so I really shouldn't complain.
I'm a book lover too and don't have a kindle either.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Roz
Roz,
DeleteI have had a severe addiction to books since I was 5. Never could kick the habit...
I love the smell and feel of real books but I succumbed to a kindle last year. I love the free books and the fact I can have hundreds of books that don't take up lots of room!! I do still buy actual books too though! X Sarah
ReplyDeleteSarah,
DeleteI don't see myself buying ebooks instead of print (though I'm a sucker for a bargain, so that could change). Actual books are...They're just to wonderful for words (yes, I have a problem lol).
I'm a librarian, and like you vowed never to own a Kindle. However, the lure of free and cheap books got the better of me so I now own a Kindle with no less than 200 books on it to date, 50 of which I have read. My co-workers all have them too and we're always swapping recommendations. Nothing replaces the feel and smell of a book though and they will always remain my first love.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, the Kindle is the perfect holiday companion. Any amount of books to dip in and out of without them adding weight to your luggage allowance. Perfect!
Leah,
DeleteThat lure is undeniably strong isn't it?
But yes, the physical sensations of reading an actual book are unparalleled.
I had the online app before I ever owned an e-reader. But I have the actual e-reader now and I'm hooked!
ReplyDeleteThere's a thing called eBookBub - it emails you free/cheap books for Kindle in the genres that you like. I only ever download the free ones~!
Lea,
DeleteOoh, that sounds cool!
I adore my real books, but they aren't ever free lol.
